Overview

King Fook, nestled at 43 Kesteven Street in Florey, ACT, stands as a distinguished gem among Canberra's Chinese dining scene. This establishment artfully balances tradition and contemporary tastes, offering a refined yet approachable experience for families, groups, and individuals craving authentic Chinese flavors.

At the heart of King Fook’s menu lies the Shanghai Fried Hand Made Noodles, a signature dish that showcases their dedication to craft and quality. The noodles arrive perfectly textured—chewy and rich—tossed with savory sauces and fresh ingredients that deliver a comforting and satisfying bite. Complementing this signature offering, the duck selections command attention, particularly the Crispy Aromatic Duck Pancakes. These are served with a variety of classic sauces such as lemon and plum, highlighting King Fook’s respect for traditional preparations infused with vibrant flavor contrasts.

Seafood lovers will find the scallop dishes a highlight. Whether paired with garlic, ginger, or black bean sauce, the scallops arrive tender and well-seasoned, reflecting precise cooking techniques. The varied omelette options, from mixed vegetables to king prawn, offer versatility, catering to meat lovers and vegetarians alike, which speaks to King Fook’s inclusive menu design.

The dining space at King Fook is thoughtfully arranged, providing a relaxed atmosphere where conversation flows easily—a welcome respite from the noisy, overcrowded eateries that can sometimes accompany Chinese dining. Guests frequently mention the efficient and attentive service, even when the restaurant juggles a high volume of takeaway orders. It’s a setting that suits casual dinners, family meals, and even accommodating dietary needs, as confirmed by patrons appreciating gluten-free and vegetarian choices.

What truly stands out is the consistency in food quality and the nuanced flavors—think perfectly executed Kung Po king prawns and the bold dry chili beef, each dish respecting the depth and heat one expects from well-prepared Chinese fare. The restaurant’s ability to meet various preferences while maintaining authenticity and balance underscores its appeal to local Canberrans and visitors:

  • Traditional dishes made with fresh, handmade ingredients
  • Intimate yet lively setting conducive to both dine-in and takeaway
  • Attentive service that thrives under pressure
  • A menu designed to be accessible for all dietary needs, making it a true neighborhood staple

In sum, King Fook is a testament to what a Chinese restaurant can be when attentive care meets culinary heritage. Whether you're seeking the comforting embrace of handmade noodles, the rich flavors of duck prepared with finesse, or a seafood dish that excites the palate, King Fook delivers with heart and skill. It’s a must-visit for anyone in Canberra longing for an authentic and satisfying Chinese dining experience that respects both the food and the guest.

Our first time eating here and it most certainly won't be our last. We enjoy a good Chinese feed, and particularly in a place where we can hear each other. After having been regulars to Yat Ban Tong, this is a wonderful change! Tonight, I feel they may have been understaffed. Our waiter welcomed us to our table. While he may have been the only one on the floor, we were astounded at his level of efficiency. Every customer was well attended to, the phone rang off the hook and was always answered. The multiple orders for takeaway were served promptly, but not at the neglect of us who were dining in. As for the food - all of the flavours were spot on. Garlic prawns : possible too much garlic Sweet and sour pork : I wanted more! Chicken and cashew : magnificent. Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce : now, this was curious to us. We are accustomed to receiving mostly stalks and asking for a better serving. Tonight, however, there was so much leafy greens that we were quite surprised. And we devoured it! Thank you for the most pleasant Chinese meal we've had in a good while. Can't wait to go back. I recommend this place to all Canberrans and beyond. You'll be glad you did.

We had kang po chicken and fried rice for dinner on a Thursday night. Food arrived pretty quick and was delicious as well. Their takeaway family packs are reasonable priced, we found. Recommend for those end of week lazy nights..

Our party included a gluten-free diner, a vegetarian and a child. The menu catered for all of us, and the service was great. A bit busy with delivery service orders but we didn’t have to wait. A few regulars were at other tables, and the atmosphere was convivial. King Fook does spicy dishes very well, highly recommend the Kung Po king prawns, and the dry chilli beef. Shanghai noodles also a winner!

Affectionately known in our house as 'The Fookster,' this establishment is coming up on 30 years in business, which suggests that they are doing something right. Prices have noticeably gone up in recent times, but you get what you pay for. The cash discount has varied over time, but is currently 10% discount on pick-up orders over $40. While they don't do a char kwai teow, the char kuen teow is usually spot on. The shallot cakes are something one doesn't see everywhere. The Shredded Pork with Vegetables Wearing a Hat is probably more impressive on a plate than in a take-away container. I really appreciate the 'No M.S.G. added on request.' They cook in vegetable oil, or sometimes canola.
